The Unique Story Behind Rooibos Earl Grey Loose Tea

The history of the Herbal Tea you’ve chosen here has two origins. The first tale took place in South Africa’s Cederberg Region. The second – at least according to legend – occurred in 19th century China.

We’ll begin in Cederberg, where the indigenous population called the Khoisan people utilised Rooibos Tea benefits in their communities. However, colonisation soon interrupted their way of life. 

This infusion was all but forgotten until a Swedish botanist named Carl Thunberg (1743-1823) rediscovered the plant. Its popularity increased thereafter.

The Chinese part of the story, meanwhile, was when Lord Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (1764-1845), reportedly saved a boy from drowning in a river. The boy’s father then gifted him with bergamot-scented Tea and named it in his honour! 

Does Rooibos Earl Grey Have Caffeine Content?

The above story has sadly been disproven as Charles Grey never visited China in his life. Nevertheless, what we lack in knowledge about its history, we make up for in information about its science. For example, Rooibos Earl Grey is 100% void of caffeine, a stimulating chemical compound that, in other beverages, boosts energy levels.

This makes it ideal for those looking to cut down their caffeine intake.

How to Make Rooibos Earl Grey Tea

1. Add to a Loose Tea Filter or Infuser or teapot.
2. Place the Tea-filled item in a cup.
3. Boil fresh water at 100°C and pour it over the leaves.
4. Allow it to steep for 5-10 minutes for the best flavour. 

How to Serve: Consider honey or lemon. Alternatively, serve it without additions.

Tasting Notes: Imparts herbaceous overtones and citrusy undertones.
